It’s no surprise that so many of my group chats are filled with women asking versions of “How many more?” Many of us can’t believe we’re having these same conversations almost exactly seven years after the Weinstein scandal broke. In many ways, it feels like we’re right back where we started. Except, this time, we know how it goes: allegations surface, the floodgates open, more survivors speak out, the backlash begins, and… has anything really changed?

And then there’s P. Diddy, 54, who is currently incarcerated in a New York jail, accused of—among other things—violent crimes against women, including forcing them to have sex at wild parties he calls “orgies.” (Combs has vehemently denied all the allegations against him.) Should I continue? And what about the unspeakable rape case unfolding in France, in which Dominique Pelicot, 71, admitted to drugging his ex-wife Gisele and inviting more than 50 strangers to rape her over the course of a decade.

Let me be clear: I think women who find the courage to speak up about their abuse are incredibly brave. How long it takes them to do so is irrelevant; they should never have been put in that position in the first place, silenced by the fear and shame they were wrongly made to feel. “I thought about speaking up at the time [when the #MeToo movement began]… but I was embarrassed and felt like a failure. I thought people would think I was getting revenge,” one woman caught up in Al-Fayed’s allegations told the press.
