Finding yourself outside the narrow spaces Rooney has carved out for her protagonists through your own biography or identity is nothing new. In a 2021 essay for Electric Literature titled “I Love Sally Rooney’s Novels, But They’re Not Written for Me,” Malavika Kannan noted that Rooney’s focus on “thin, white, highly educated women with fantastically attractive lovers” made her wonder, “Where are the normal people of color?” Yet there’s something about the striking physicality of Rooney’s characters that makes you wonder whether a Rooney heroine of fatness could ever exist. After all, a hallmark of Rooney’s protagonists is the kind of intentional disappearance—into a love affair, into BDSM, into friendships, or even into the recesses of one’s own body—that fat people rarely enjoy. The world may clearly wish us to shrink or disappear, and we may wish that for ourselves, but we are almost always present.

Thinness has long been the unexamined default in literary fiction. As novelist and journalist Emma Copley Eisenberg wrote in The New Republic, thinness “is often associated with morality and fatness with immorality,” while “characters are often made fat as shorthand to tell the reader that they are rude, weak, cruel, ruthless, stupid, mediocre, or mentally ill.” Rooney’s novel’s perspective isn’t so crudely binary, but partly because it’s impossible to be rude, weak, cruel, or stupid if you’re not there in the first place.

Novels certainly don’t need to reflect their readership, and I have a much lower appetite for sympathetic, well-developed representations of an obese reader than I did just a few years ago. But as I meet another group of protagonists who dream of a better, more principled world, I find myself wondering where obese people fit into it all—or, rather, where we don’t fit in. “For about a year, anyone who wanted to meet me would be introduced: I’m on leave. I’m taking pictures from my book—it’s the only way I can do it,” the British architectural and interior designer Ben Pentreath told me. “It was amazing, no one blinked. It’s hard to do that when you’re running an architectural design studio with 40 people working in it.”
