While the Walz-Vance confrontation was considerably more civil than last month’s Harris-Trump debate, it was still quite satisfying to see two women — in this case CBS moderators Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan — mute both men when they spoke out of turn. While Walz faced some tough questions about newly discovered inconsistencies in his claim that he was in Hong Kong during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, Vance was asked about once likening Trump to “America’s Hitler.” Walz then also directly asked Vance if Trump would lose the 2020 election — to which the senator gave what can only be described as a non-answer.

“We’re number one in health care for a reason. We trust women; we trust doctors,” Walz said of Minnesota, referencing real-life examples of abortion rights activists like Hadley Duvall being denied necessary reproductive care. Walz signed a bill to enshrine abortion rights in the Minnesota state constitution in January 2023—making the contrast between his record on reproductive rights and the Trump-Vance campaign’s outlandish statements on abortion all the more stark.

Walz and Vance were able to (more or less) agree on the need for more and better child care solutions for working families. While their plans weren’t identical, it was nice to hear America’s child care crisis—an issue that disproportionately affects women—addressed on a national stage. It might be easy to forget, given the novelty of getting through a debate without either candidate calling the other “mentally retarded,” but Vance’s deft take on Trump’s agenda was still… the same agenda.
