According to American Horror Story: Hotel set designer Ellen Brill, this charming old cabin in the woods is haunted by the friendly ghost of its founder, affectionately known as “Grandpa Deetjen.” (Brill says she “heard footsteps and doors slamming and started freaking out.”) The place certainly looks a little spooky: Set amid the lush redwoods of the NorCal coast, the hotel’s rooms feature wood paneling and her core aesthetic. If that’s not creepy enough for you, the nearby Point Sur Lighthouse is said to be home to the spirits of departed sailors and sailors, and offers moonlit tours and “ghost hunts” throughout October.

Austin, Texas, is home to many ghost tours, but this famous downtown hotel is at the top of every ghost hunter’s list. President Lyndon B. Johnson is just one of the famous spirits said to roam the grounds. He and his wife had their first date here in 1934, and he also watched the results of the 1964 Presidential Election from the Presidential Suite; after his victory, LBJ celebrated in the Grand Ballroom. Previously, a four-year-old fell down the grand staircase to his death in 1887. Paranormal investigators have reportedly caught the faint sound of a ball bouncing off the wall while a mischievous voice giggles. Perhaps the most famous ghosts, however, are the pair of jilted brides, each of whom committed suicide while staying in Room 329 decades apart.

Chelsea’s posh Cadogan Hotel is famous for being a celebrity hangout. Artists, models, and trendsetters have all stayed at the Belmond-owned hotel; perhaps most famously, Oscar Wilde was arrested here in room 118 for “gross indecency” in 1895. Of course, the historic hotel is also famous for being haunted—though Wilde is apparently not the ghost most frequently seen. Instead, tales of hauntings often revolve around a friend of Wilde’s, actress and high-society celebrity Lillie Langtry, who once owned the hotel. Although she died in 1929, she is often spotted in the hotel’s restaurant—especially around Christmas when the crowds are lighter.
