Ultimately, Korean moisturizers can vary in their formulations in terms of aesthetics (like fast absorption) as well as their sheer pleasure (like a breathable, cloud-like texture). While these products may appeal to certain skin types—those with oily skin, for example, may prefer a light, cloud-like texture—they’re more about the pleasure of application. Ultimately, though, “I don’t believe that Korean moisturizers are better than American moisturizers or vice versa,” says Dr. Chang. “The choice of moisturizer is personal and subjective, and can also change over time, with age, and with the seasons.” And, like many skin-care formulas, Korean moisturizers aren’t perfect—so while their unique ingredients and formulations may work for you now, it may not be worth avoiding a product that’s worked for you, regardless of where it came from.

Because they’re well-tolerated by most people, Korean moisturizers are suitable for a wide range of skin types—so while they work for those with inflamed and irritated skin, anyone can benefit from them. You can also find alternative ingredients to target specific concerns and conditions, like acne. For example, some are “formulated with ingredients that have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, such as tea tree oil, propolis, and snail mucin,” says Dr. Chang; that makes them a worthwhile option to replace or supplement ingredients commonly used in the U.S., like salicylic acid.
