If you haven’t satisfied your 1990s fashion gossip cravings after the first three episodes of the six-part docuseries In Vogue: The 90s, don’t worry; the second half of the season just hit Hulu, and there’s plenty more supermodel mystery, designer drama, deep celebrity reflection, and glamorous high fashion to look forward to. It may be hard to believe, but in the early seasons of Sex and the City, legendary costume designer Patricia Field struggled to get designers to lend her outfits to Carrie Bradshaw and her crew for the show. That all changed when Fendi sent Carrie’s signature purple glitter baguette—you know, the one that was stolen by a robber (along with her Manolo Blahniks) in Season 3, Episode 17. “When she wore the Fendi baguette, it was a success,” Vogue’s Tonne Goodman recalls in the docuseries. “It was one of those magic things about suggestion – that this was the bag to have. She put it on the map.” (Even Victoria Beckham coveted one!)

Harper’s financial rise and assimilation are also reflected in what she wears. In the first season, she wears unremarkable outfits; in the second, she walks into Pierpoint with a Prada bag and a camel coat. “You see her wearing a camel coat, which is very similar to the coat that Yasmin wore in the first season,” season two costume designer Colleen Morris-Glennon told Vogue. “I just wanted that almost unconscious replication.” TV characters may not always wear their hearts on their sleeves. But their wealth? Lately, it seems like they do.

Even as Robert becomes more comfortable in his surroundings—and earns more money—his clothes still show that he’s not. In season two, Robert is, yes, wearing a tailored suit. But he’s terrible at keeping it clean: “I don’t want to ruin my suit,” he tells Nicole, the older woman he unwisely sleeps with. “I just bought it.” Yasmin, however, snorts cocaine multiple times in her Saint Laurent dress. In this season, Robert commits perhaps the biggest wardrobe mistake of all: showing up to a party in an outfit that’s too revealing. “You can’t wear that,” Sir Henry Muck (Kit Harrington) admonishes Robert, who shows up to an exclusive ayahuasca party in a suit, and tosses him a Lumi T-shirt. Even when it comes to psychedelic trips, there’s a certain appropriate attire that some characters seem to intuit.
