“Does it belong on the architecture shelf? Or the town planning shelf, or the interior decoration shelf?” Pentreath asked of the book from the start. It wasn’t until his talented friend and contemporary Veere Grenney encouraged him to put it all together in one volume that Pentreath realized the scope of the project. “The most fundamental thing about me is—and according to [Grenney] I do everything.” Another atypical element of An English Vision is that all the photographs were taken by Pentreath himself. His justification? He had to be on set, after all, so he might as well take the pictures. Before the project, Pentreath said he didn’t know how to use a camera. (He insists that he still doesn’t know, even when the images prove otherwise.)

When several long-planned trips to Scotland to photograph the charming streets of Tornagrain coincided with incessant rain, Pentreath knew he had to find a new approach. “I needed to keep my diary completely blank so that at any moment I could be somewhere random – at five in the morning or three in the morning – waiting for the sun to rise,” he says. So began his sabbatical, resulting in a book that showcases Pentreath’s eye in all its precise detail. “It provides an insight into Ben’s wide range of talents, from his ability to visualise and plan a three-dimensional urban environment to his intuition for applying precise architectural detail,” writes the Earl of Moray (a driving force in the development of Tornagrain) in the book’s introduction.

Pentreath’s head-down approach hasn’t always been this way. After eight years of starts and stops, he realised the only way his new book – the first to focus entirely on his own projects – could succeed was to ignore everything else. And while An English Vision, out now, fits into Rizzoli’s glossy interiors collection, it was never meant to be a conventional design book. Pentreath’s eponymous company works on a range of scales: from renovating cookbook author Skye McAlpine’s London townhouse with a mango-coloured Smeg fridge in the kitchen, to building an entire town in the Scottish Highlands from scratch. Looking back on Pentreath’s work, it reflects more than his penchant for Bloomsbury floral wallpaper and the allure of a Greek key-shaped upholstered stool. According to the designer himself, it’s a collection of things that “last longer than lampshades… if you do it right, the street will look exactly the way you designed it for thousands of years.”
