I suffered from a combination of both well-known symptoms; hot flashes, depressed mood, bloating and weight gain, and other symptoms that I didn’t immediately recognize as being related to menopause, such as itchy scalp and skin, tender breasts, sore hips and knees, fatigue, patchy skin, sore gums and brain fog. It took a while to realize that I was menopausal, and for a few months, I just assumed that I would just have to live with the symptoms, which were largely due to the fluctuations in the sex hormone, estrogen, during menopause and the huge drop in estrogen after menopause.

I am a qualified personal trainer and nutrition coach, and I know a lot about how women’s bodies work, so I decided to do some research and talk to experts. Going through menopause can affect women in many different ways, and for some, dealing with the symptoms can be incredibly uncomfortable, even debilitating. And although World Menopause Awareness Month begins this week, this stage of life can come as a surprise to many women. I started noticing signs of perimenopause about six months ago, just after my 45th birthday. However, it’s hard to know exactly when it started because the symptoms are so wide-ranging and not always obvious. There are the common signs: hot flashes, night sweats, irregular periods, bloating, weight gain and mood swings, but there are also lesser-known signs like headaches, itchy skin, memory loss, muscle aches, joint stiffness, depression and decreased sex drive.
