The downtown area is where people are holed up, lying low, staying put, making the most of the time: pancakes on the fire, cowboy coffee on the camp stove, kids on bikes and scooters taking over the branch-strewn streets, enjoying the strange novelty of this obstacle course. The downtown area is where tourists are stranded, calling airlines and rental cars and soothing panicked relatives. People wander around, joining small groups of people staring at their phones every four or six blocks, hoping for a Wi-Fi connection. Some businesses have power and are open and crowded, oddly enough; bars serve beer to tourists.

The library Wi-Fi wasn’t working for me, so I walked a few blocks to the next crowd of about 30 people standing outside a real estate office, which somehow had working Wi-Fi. A few texts came in from friends telling me about the boil-water advisory. I assumed the water I got right after the storm was safe because I drank it and didn’t get sick. Plus, I only had an electric stove anyway. My connection was spotty. I asked my stepdad to send me road conditions, but his screenshots wouldn’t download completely and I couldn’t zoom in enough to see enough information. When the signal was spotty, I had sweet, worried friends from back home texting me to check in, but when their messages came in, they jumped the queue, texting back the questions I needed from my emergency contacts. Here’s a good lesson: When you hear that someone is in a crisis with limited or no connectivity, it’s important to send them evacuation information, connectivity, food, water, and breaking news via text message only. Your phone can’t load screenshots. It’s wise to think of cell service as a finite resource, like water and gas.

I used that time to connect with friends in Durham and ask about road conditions. Were all the roads out of Asheville impassable? Could I afford to risk it and turn back if I ran into trouble with one tank of gas? Could I afford to take detours through small roads I was unfamiliar with and have no way to check conditions in real time? My car was the only way I could charge my phone or listen to the radio for updates, and it was my only source of information other than fleeting Wi-Fi signals. I was shocked that all four public radio stations were broadcasting Saturday morning traffic updates and emergencies around the clock. Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me? Dude. Today? I got more useful and informative information from WNCW, a local independent station, as well as a Christian rock station. They invited people to call and report on the roads, and all I heard on Saturday was a loud “Don’t leave” from people stuck there. People were getting on the highway with a quarter tank of gas, trying to get gas on their way out of town. People were running out of gas at every exit. It was chaos.
