Nora Ephron’s film about a Brooklyn cooking blogger who idolizes Julia Child is wildly imperfect (though it would be perfect if only it had Meryl Streep in it), but what could make the holidays more festive than watching Streep and Stanley Tucci eat a bunch of avocados? In the years since this Kevin James film was released, it has garnered a devoted following, thanks in part to a late-blooming meme campaign. Paul Blart: Mall Cop, however, is more of a mindless pastiche, focusing on a crowded mall being held hostage on what is arguably the worst day of the year for a mall cop: Black Friday.

Don’t be fooled—Judd Apatow’s Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler film is definitely more of a tearjerker than a laugh-out-loud comedy. The film centers on a comedian who learns he has terminal cancer and doesn’t have much time left to live—but there’s one particular Thanksgiving dinner scene where Sandler’s George addresses the subject of aging and loneliness that will make you want to hug all your friends and thank them for being so important to you.

In this touching film written, directed, and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda, a family gathers not to celebrate a holiday, but to remember the 12th anniversary of a man’s death. Still Walking, however, has a strong Thanksgiving vibe, taking place over the course of a day: grandparents play with grandchildren, food is lovingly prepared, and old tensions are slowly rekindled. In Dan in Real Life, widowed single father Dan Burns (played by Steve Carell) visits his family for Thanksgiving in the opening scenes. The heartwarming comedy then follows Dan’s feelings for a woman who turns out to be his brother’s girlfriend. Talk about a Thanksgiving drama!
